FAQs

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy offers treatment for a range of disorders including anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or simply the inability to move through life and achieve one’s goals. It is concerned with helping people engage with complex issues which underlie their problems and suffering, leading to a deeper understanding of their way of being in the world and hence develop a stronger, more meaningful, sense of self.

Psychotherapy works through a special quality of relationship – that between the therapist and the client. The private ‘space’ offered in therapy provides a safe, reliable environment in which to explore those areas of life that normally we may feel unable to reveal. While sometimes a difficult experience, facing painful issues is often necessary to move ahead with life.

My approach to therapy is holistic in that I incorporate the whole person – mind, body and spirit. In addition to ‘talking’, and if appropriate, I use mindfulness, breathing techniques, visualisation and bodywork to enhance the outcome.

I believe that the relationship between client and therapist is of primary importance. This unique relationship allows space for a person to be supported and understood in a safe environment while undertaking a journey of self-discovery and insight. Over time, as trust grows, facing issues that may be buried or denied becomes possible leading to a release of the energy it has taken to suppress those issues.

The way we develop from birth is deeply influenced by our environment and the significant people in that environment. So much of our behaviour stems from the unconscious so that we often don’t know why we do the things we do. Working with the unconscious aims to uncover and raise awareness of certain patterns in our life that we struggle to change. Change is possible if that’s what you desire. Every person is unique therefore I work eclectically with my clients, adapting to the needs of the individual in order to achieve the best possible outcome.

The therapeutic process works at different levels. Clients initially consult a therapist with some immediately pressing concern or problem, seeking counselling for that issue. It can be short, medium or long-term depending on progress and what is uncovered along the course of treatment.
